The AWS AIB-C01 certification requirements are minimal: there are no mandatory prerequisites. AWS recommends about 6 months of experience working with or alongside teams adopting AI, but the official AWS Certified AI Business Strategist page confirms you can book the exam without coding skills, hands-on AWS experience, or another AWS certification.
| Quick answer | Detail |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | Moderate (our rating: 3 out of 5). No technical tasks, but every question asks for business judgment where several answers look reasonable. |
| Pass rate | Not published by AWS. Treat any pass rate you see as unofficial. |
| Realistic prep time | 1 to 6 weeks part-time, depending on your background (our estimate; see the self-check below). |
| Built for | Product and program managers, sales and business development, line-of-business leaders, consultants, business analysts, and marketers |

What are the AWS AIB-C01 certification requirements?
The requirements fall into three layers. Only the third layer is enforced.
| Layer | What it includes | Enforced? |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Mandatory | Nothing. AWS’s certification testing policy states that every certification can be earned without completing specific prerequisites. | Not applicable |
| 2. Recommended | About 6 months with or alongside AI initiatives, basic AI literacy, and strategic awareness of AWS AI services and frameworks | No |
| 3. Administrative | An account, valid ID, a booked seat, and the exam fee | Yes |
What do you need to book and sit the exam?
- An AWS Certification Account. You create it at aws.training with an AWS Builder ID. It is separate from a regular AWS account.
- Valid government-issued ID. If your ID is not from the country where you test, a passport from your country of citizenship becomes your primary ID, plus a secondary ID.
- Parental consent if you are 13 to 17. Teens in that age range can test with a parent or legal guardian’s consent.
- A Pearson VUE appointment. Choose a test center or an online proctored session.
- A payment method. Pearson VUE accepts Visa, American Express, Mastercard, JCB, or an exam voucher.
- ESL +30, if English is not your first language. Request it once in your Certification Account before you register. It adds 30 minutes to exams taken in English.
Scheduling rules to know before you pay: you can reschedule up to 24 hours before your appointment, a maximum of two times. Cancelling or missing an appointment within 24 hours forfeits the fee.

Is 6 months of experience actually required for AIB-C01?
No. The confusion comes from AWS using different wording on different pages.
| AWS source | What it says | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| AIB-C01 exam guide | 6 months working with or alongside AI teams is a recommended baseline | Guidance |
| AWS launch announcement | The exam is designed for professionals with at least six months of experience with or alongside AI initiatives | Describes the target audience |
| Certification testing policy | No AWS certification requires specific prerequisites | The binding rule |
“At least six months” in the launch post reads like a gate, which is why some summaries call it a requirement. The policy that governs registration makes it a recommendation.
What counts as “6 months working with AI”?
AWS does not define qualifying experience. The key word in the exam guide is “alongside,” which means you do not need to build anything. Here is how we interpret it by role:
| Your role | Counts as AI exposure if you have… |
|---|---|
| Product or program manager | Owned or co-owned a pilot, feature, or launch that used AI |
| Sales or business development | Scoped, demoed, or sold an AI-enabled offering to a customer |
| Consultant | Advised a client on an AI use case, vendor choice, or governance plan |
| Business analyst | Defined requirements, KPIs, or baseline metrics for an AI project |
| Marketer | Evaluated AI vendors or ran work with AI tools under a usage policy |
| Line-of-business leader | Approved budget for, or led a team through, an AI rollout |
What AWS knowledge does the AIB-C01 exam expect?
Does the AIB-C01 exam test AWS services?
Yes, but only at the decision level. The certification page states that the exam does not assess AWS services knowledge, yet the exam guide still lists in-scope AWS services and features.
The launch announcement resolves the conflict: AWS services appear as practical context, not as the subject being tested. You choose the right service for a business situation. You never configure one.
| Category (basic application only) | In-scope items | Know it as |
|---|---|---|
| AI and machine learning | Amazon Bedrock, Amazon SageMaker AI | Managed generative AI platform vs. custom ML path |
| Business intelligence | Amazon Quick | AI-powered business assistant |
| Cloud strategy and governance | AWS Cloud Adoption Framework (AWS CAF), AWS shared responsibility model | Adoption planning and who owns which risk |
| Pricing and cost management | Consumption, instance, and seat-based pricing; AWS Pricing Calculator; AWS Cost Explorer; AWS Marketplace | Business cases, cost control, and build-buy-partner decisions |
The exam guide also recommends familiarity with Bedrock Guardrails and Knowledge Bases, the Well-Architected Framework Responsible AI Lens, and Savings Plans.
What is out of scope for AIB-C01?
- Job tasks: coding models, data or feature engineering, hyperparameter tuning, building ML pipelines, and configuring or administering AWS services
- Services: AWS’s out-of-scope services list covers compute (Amazon EC2, AWS Lambda), networking, databases and storage (Amazon RDS, Amazon S3), containers, developer tools, IAM policy writing, and AWS KMS
If a course spends time on console labs, it is teaching outside this exam.
How does the AIB-C01 beta change the requirements?
The beta is a real certification exam with different rules from the standard version that follows it.
| Requirement | Beta (now) | Standard (after beta) |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee | $50 | $100, the same price as Foundational exams |
| Questions | 85, multiple choice and multiple response | Fewer: beta exams contain more total and scored questions than the standard version |
| Duration | See the breakdown below | Not yet published |
| Languages | English and Japanese | Additional languages at general availability |
| Attempts | One beta attempt; a retake must wait for the standard version | Standard retake rules |
| Official Practice Exam | Not available during the beta | Not yet dated |
| Availability | Delivery began September 29, 2026; beta windows generally last 1 to 3 months | Ongoing |
The same in both versions:
- Passing score of 700 on a scaled range of 100 to 1,000, with compensatory scoring, so you pass on the overall score, not per domain
- Results within 5 business days and a 3-year certification period
- An Early Adopter digital badge if you earn the certification by February 15, 2027
How long is the AIB-C01 exam, really?
The exam guide lists 130 minutes, while the certification page lists 170 minutes for the beta. AWS has not explained the gap, so plan around the time shown at checkout.
| Scenario (our math) | Minutes per question |
|---|---|
| Beta, 170 minutes for 85 questions | 2.0 |
| Beta with ESL +30 (200 minutes) | 2.4 |
| Exam guide figure applied to 85 questions | 1.5 |
What are the AIB-C01 exam topics and their weights?
| Domain | Weight | Approx. questions on the 85-question beta* | Focus areas |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. AI Fundamentals and Literacy | 24% | ~20 | AI vs. ML vs. generative AI, RAG and fine-tuning, agents, when rules beat AI |
| 2. AI Strategy and Business Value Creation | 28% | ~24 | Use cases, build-buy-partner, KPIs, baselines, ROI |
| 3. AI Governance and Responsible AI Leadership | 24% | ~20 | Responsible AI trade-offs, accountability, risk classification, IP |
| 4. Business Readiness, Leadership, and AI Transformation | 24% | ~20 | Maturity, data ownership, change management, pilot to scale |
*Our math, applying the exam guide’s weights to all 85 questions. AWS does not disclose how many beta questions are unscored.
Skill 2.1.4 in the AI Strategy and Business Value Creation domain asks you to determine when AI is not the right solution. Expect scenarios where “don’t use AI” is the correct answer.
Do you need AWS Certified AI Practitioner AIF-C01 before AIB-C01?
No. AWS lists no other certification as a requirement, and the AWS Certified AI Practitioner page describes the two exams as built for different purposes. Here is how their requirements compare:
| AIB-C01 | AWS Certified AI Practitioner AIF-C01 | |
|---|---|---|
| Category | Business | Foundational |
| Experience AWS describes | Working with or alongside AI initiatives | Up to 6 months of exposure to AI/ML technologies on AWS |
| AWS service familiarity expected | Business level only | EC2, S3, Lambda, Bedrock, SageMaker AI, and IAM, per the AIF-C01 exam guide |
| Question formats | 2 | 4, adding ordering and matching |
| Pace | 2.0 minutes per question (beta) | 65 questions in 90 minutes, about 1.4 minutes each |
| Languages | 2 (beta) | 10, since Italian and German were retired after October 15, 2026 |
Which should you take first?
- AIB-C01 first if your job is deciding, funding, selling, or governing AI rather than building it.
- AIF-C01 first if you cannot yet explain AI, ML, and generative AI basics to a colleague.
- Both if you sit between business and technical teams. After AIB-C01, AWS points to AIF-C01, then Machine Learning Engineer Associate or Generative AI Developer Professional.

We built this from AWS’s published list of exam technologies and concepts. Give yourself one point for each statement that is true today:
- I can explain AI, ML, and generative AI differences to a non-technical stakeholder.
- I can name a problem where rule-based automation beats AI.
- I can explain RAG vs. fine-tuning as business options, not code.
- I have defined, or helped define, a KPI and a baseline before a project launched.
- I can frame a build-buy-partner choice using budget, timeline, and compliance.
- I can name responsible AI principles and a trade-off between two of them.
- I know what shadow AI is and how an organization should classify AI tools.
- I can describe how an AI pilot scales to enterprise-wide adoption.
- I can explain Bedrock, SageMaker AI, and Amazon Quick at a business level.
- I know when each AI pricing model (consumption, instance, seat) fits.
How much preparation time does AIB-C01 take? These are our estimates. AWS publishes no study-hour guidance.
| Score | What it means | Estimated prep |
|---|---|---|
| 8 to 10 | You meet the spirit of the 6-month recommendation | 1 to 2 weeks (10 to 15 hours) |
| 5 to 7 | Solid business base, gaps in AI literacy or governance | 3 to 4 weeks (20 to 30 hours) |
| 0 to 4 | Limited AI exposure so far | 5 to 6 weeks (35 to 45 hours), or start with AIF-C01 |
Which prep resources match the AIB-C01 requirements?
- AWS digital courses: 13 modules mapped to the four exam domains, according to the launch announcement
- AWS Skill Builder exam prep plan: includes the Official Practice Question Set and walk-through questions
How do you choose an AWS Certified AI Business Strategist practice exam?
Real AWS Certified AI Business Strategist AIB-C01 questions use two formats: multiple choice (one correct answer of four) and multiple response (two or more correct answers of five or more). Unanswered questions score as wrong, and there is no penalty for guessing.
Use this checklist for any third-party bank, including AWS Certified AI Business Strategist AIB-C01 Udemy courses:
- Formats match: only multiple-choice and multiple response.
- Length matches your form: 85 questions for the beta. A 65-question set assumes a standard form AWS has not published.
- Questions map to skill IDs from the exam guide, such as Skill 2.1.4.
- No console labs: configuration work is out of scope.
- Explanations cite AWS documentation, not only the right letter.
Should you take the AIB-C01 beta now or wait?
- Book the beta now if you scored 8 or higher, test in English or Japanese, and want the $50 price plus the Early Adopter badge. The beta window is short, and AWS has not announced its end date.
- Wait for the standard exam if you scored 7 or lower and cannot close the gaps soon, or if you need another language. You only get one beta attempt.
- Take AIF-C01 instead if your role requires service-level AWS knowledge. The AWS Certified AI Business Strategist AIB-C01 exam will not validate it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does passing the AIB-C01 beta earn the full certification?
Yes. Under AWS’s testing policy, candidates who pass a beta exam earn the same AWS Certification as standard-exam passers.
Can I take the AIB-C01 exam online from home?
Yes. Online proctoring in English runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and you must communicate with the proctor to complete the session.
Do I need math or statistics for AIB-C01?
No. The exam guide lists mathematical or statistical analysis of AI and ML models as an out-of-scope task.
Do I need to know AI regulations or ISO standards?
At an awareness level, yes. AWS’s concept list includes regulatory and compliance considerations plus ISO/IEC 23053 and ISO/IEC 42001.
How do I recertify the AWS AI Business Strategist certification?
AWS has not yet published a recertification path for AIB-C01. For comparison, AIF-C01 holders recertify by passing the latest version or by earning Machine Learning Engineer Associate.
Is AIB-C01 harder than AIF-C01?
It is harder in a different way. AIF-C01 rewards knowing what AWS services do. AIB-C01 rewards choosing between plausible business decisions, with more time per question to read longer scenarios.
