The AWS Certified AI Business Strategist (AIB-C01) exam tests whether you can make business decisions about AI, not build it. To pass, study the four official domains, learn to pick the answer a business strategist would own (not the one an engineer would execute), and score at least 700 out of 1,000. This AWS AIB-C01 study guide shows you how to do all three.
| Quick verdict | Our assessment |
|---|---|
| Difficulty | 3 out of 5 for the target candidate. No code or math, but every question is a scenario judgment call. |
| Pass rate | AWS does not publish pass rates for its certification exams. |
| Realistic prep time | 20 to 30 hours for most candidates. AWS’s own free prep path alone runs about 19 hours (breakdown below). |
| Best for | Product and program managers, consultants, sales and business development leads, analysts, marketers |
What Are the Key AWS AIB-C01 Exam Details?

Sources: duration, question types, and scoring from the official AIB-C01 exam guide; price, languages, and delivery from the AWS Certified AI Business Strategist certification page.
- Note for early candidates: If you sit the AWS AI Business Strategist beta exam instead of the standard version, the certification page lists 85 questions, 170 minutes, and a 50 USD fee. Beta candidates may take the beta version only once.
What Are the AIB-C01 Exam Objectives?
The AIB-C01 exam objectives are split into 4 domains, 13 tasks, and 58 numbered skills. Strategy carries the most weight, but the skill count tells a different story.

Original analysis: domain weights come from AWS; skill counts were tallied from the four domain pages of the exam guide.
| Domain | Exam weight | Skills | Weight per skill* | What it really tests |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. AI Fundamentals and Literacy | 24% | 13 | 1.85% | Choosing the right AI solution type for a business problem |
| 2. AI Strategy and Business Value Creation | 28% | 14 | 2.00% | Prioritizing initiatives and proving value with KPIs, baselines, and ROI |
| 3. AI Governance and Responsible AI Leadership | 24% | 12 | 2.00% | Balancing business goals against risk, compliance, and human oversight |
| 4. Business Readiness, Leadership, and AI Transformation | 24% | 19 | 1.26% | Assessing maturity, leading change, and scaling pilots |
*Weight per skill assumes skills within a domain count evenly, which AWS does not state. Treat it as a prioritization signal, not a scoring rule.
What this means for your study time:
- Go deep on Domains 2 and 3. Each skill there carries the most weight, so expect more than one question per skill.
- Go broad on Domain 4. It holds a third of all skills but only 24% of the score. Learn each concept well enough to recognize it in a scenario.
- Treat Domain 1 as the foundation. You cannot judge a build-buy-partner decision without knowing what RAG and fine-tuning do.

What Is the “1 Mindset” That Passes AIB-C01?
The mindset is: answer as the person who owns the business outcome, not the person who builds the system. The exam guide rules out coding, model tuning, data engineering, and configuring AWS services. Many wrong answers are technically valid actions that belong to someone else’s job.

Run every answer option through this four-check Strategist Test:
- Is this my decision? If an option requires coding, configuring, or tuning, it is a builder task. Eliminate it unless the question asks what to request from the technical team.
- Is AI even the right tool? Rule-based automation beats AI for predictable, fixed-logic processes (Skill 1.2.1). “Don’t use AI here” can be the correct answer (Skill 2.1.4).
- Can the value be proven? Prefer options that set baselines, define KPIs, or tie the initiative to a business outcome before more money is spent.
- Is it governed before it scales? Prefer options that add human oversight, risk classification, or a phased rollout before broad deployment.
How Does the Strategist Test Work on a Real Question?
These scenarios were written for this guide to mirror the exam’s style. They are not taken from any AWS question bank.

Which Scenario Clues Point to Which Answer?
AIB-C01 questions describe a business situation and hide the tested concept inside it. This decoder maps common scenario clues to the skill being tested and the answer pattern that usually wins.
| If the scenario says… | It is testing… | Strongest answer pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Employees use AI tools nobody approved | Shadow AI (1.2.4) | Classify tools as approved, blocked, or under evaluation, plus a request path for new tools |
| The process follows fixed, predictable rules | Rules vs. AI (1.2.1) | Rule-based automation, not AI |
| Answers must come from current internal documents | Model adaptation (1.3.3) | RAG (for example, Bedrock Knowledge Bases), not fine-tuning |
| Outputs must consistently match specialized language or style | Model adaptation (1.3.3) | Fine-tuning |
| Long documents get cut off or early details are ignored | Tokens and context windows (1.3.2) | Recognize the context limit; split or summarize the input |
| The task needs several steps and actions across systems | AI agents (1.2.2) | An agent with access to the right tools |
| Leadership asks if a pilot worked, with no “before” data | Baselines (2.2.2) | Establish a baseline before judging or scaling |
| Many AI ideas, limited budget | Prioritization (2.1.3) | Rank by value, feasibility, sustainability, and alignment |
| AI makes high-impact decisions about people | Oversight and risk tiers (3.1.4, 3.2.4) | Human review plus a risk classification |
| Model accuracy slowly declines after launch | Drift (1.2.3, 3.3.4) | Ongoing monitoring with defined retraining or review triggers |
| A successful pilot stalls at adoption | Change leadership (4.3) | Executive sponsorship, champions, transparent communication |
| Several teams build overlapping AI projects | Scaling (4.4.3) | An AI center of excellence (CoE) |
How Much AWS Service Knowledge Does AWS AIB-C01 Require?
Less than any other AWS certification exam, but not zero. AWS markets the certification as not assessing AWS services knowledge, yet the in-scope services list still names specific offerings at a “basic application only” level.
Know what each one is for and when to choose it, never how to set it up:
| In-scope item | What to know for the exam |
|---|---|
| Amazon Bedrock | Managed generative AI platform; Guardrails for safety controls, Knowledge Bases for RAG, pricing tiers |
| Amazon SageMaker AI | Custom ML; when a managed service is not enough |
| Amazon Quick | AI-powered business assistant (the guide uses this name, not QuickSight) |
| AWS Cloud Adoption Framework | Planning and scaling AI across people, process, and governance |
| AWS shared responsibility model | What AWS secures vs. what your organization owns for AI workloads |
| Pricing and cost tools | Consumption, instance, and seat-based pricing; Savings Plans; Pricing Calculator; Cost Explorer; AWS Marketplace for build-buy-partner choices |
Easy-to-miss detail: Skill 4.4.1 describes transformation phases as envision, experiment, launch, scale. The AWS Cloud Adoption Framework uses envision, align, launch, scale. Learn both so a distractor that swaps one phase does not catch you.
What Official AIB-C01 Prep Does AWS Offer, Free and Paid?
AWS publishes a complete 4-step AIB-C01 exam prep page on Skill Builder. We reviewed every item on October 22, 2026:
| AWS resource | Time | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Official Practice Question Set | 30 min | Free |
| AWS AI Business Strategist Learning Plan (13 courses) | 14 h 30 min | Free |
| Domain 1 to 4 Review courses | 1 h each (4 h) | Free |
| Exam Prep Overview and Summary | 20 min | Free |
| Domain 1 to 4 Practice sets (exam-style questions, flashcards) | 1 h each (4 h) | Skill Builder subscription |
| Meeting Simulator for Domains 2 and 4 | 30 min each (1 h) | Skill Builder subscription |
| Official Pretest | 1 h 30 min | Skill Builder subscription |
Totals: about 19 hours 20 minutes free, plus 6 hours 30 minutes in subscription content.
Our finding: The learning plan’s 13 courses line up one-to-one with the exam guide’s 13 task statements. That makes the plan a reliable checklist: finish a course, and you have covered one full task.
| Domain | Learning plan courses | Course time |
|---|---|---|
| Domain 1 | Core AI Concepts; Generative AI Concepts; AI Solution Types | 3 h 15 min |
| Domain 2 | Develop AI Strategies; Measure AI Business Value; Position AI for Competitive Advantage | 3 h |
| Domain 3 | Responsible AI Principles; AI Governance and Compliance; AI Risk Controls | 3 h 45 min |
| Domain 4 | Assess AI Readiness; Data and Infrastructure Foundations; Lead Enterprise-Wide Change; Scale AI from Pilots | 4 h 30 min |
Is There an AWS Certified AI Business Strategist Practice Exam?
Yes, in two forms. The free Official Practice Question Set (30 minutes) shows the question style, and the subscription Official Pretest (1 hour 30 minutes) is the closest official readiness check. A full Official Practice Exam is listed on the certification page as the final step but is not yet available.
Two more resources are worth knowing:
- “Become an AWS AI Business Strategist”: a 2-day instructor-led course from AWS and its authorized training partners. Useful for teams, not required to pass.
- Responsible AI Lens: AWS’s vocabulary for responsible AI dimensions such as fairness, explainability, veracity, and controllability. Domain 3 questions use this language.
When judging a third-party AWS Certified AI Business Strategist practice exam, check that questions are scenario-based and that explanations say why each wrong option fails. Recall questions (“What does Bedrock do?”) will not prepare you for this exam.
How Long Should You Study, and in What Order?
Anchor your plan to AWS’s free path (about 19 hours), then adjust for your background:
| Your background | Estimated total | Adjustment to the free path |
|---|---|---|
| Business role, 6+ months around AI projects | 20 to 30 h | Full path plus practice reviews |
| Holds AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) | 15 to 25 h | Skim the three Domain 1 courses |
| Engineer or technical builder | 20 to 30 h | Extra time on Domains 2 and 4, and on the Strategist Test |
| New to AI | 40 to 50 h | Add introductory AI material before starting Domain 1 |
These totals are our estimates, not AWS data.
A 4-week plan built on the official courses:
| Week | Study | Apply it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Official Practice Question Set as a diagnostic, then Domain 1 courses and review (about 4 h 45 min) | Explain RAG, fine-tuning, agents, and rules-based automation in one sentence each |
| 2 | Domain 2 courses and review (about 4 h) | Draft a one-page business case with KPIs, a baseline, and ROI for an AI idea at your company |
| 3 | Domain 3 courses and review, plus the first two Domain 4 courses (about 6 h 45 min) | Assign a real AI initiative a risk tier and a maturity stage |
| 4 | Remaining Domain 4 courses and review, then practice sets or Pretest (about 3 h 30 min plus practice) | Run every missed question through the Strategist Test and note which check you skipped |
The “Apply it” column is where most of the learning happens. Using your own workplace turns definitions into the judgment calls the exam scores.

How Does AIB-C01 Exam Registration Work?
AIB-C01 exam registration runs through your AWS Certification Account, which is separate from an AWS console account. AWS’s Before Testing policies set out the process:
- Sign in at aws.training/Certification with an AWS Builder ID.
- Select Go to your Account, then Schedule New Exam.
- Find AIB-C01 and choose Schedule with Pearson VUE.
- Pick a test center or online proctoring, choose a time, and pay.
Rules to know before you book:
- English is not your first language? Request the ESL +30 accommodation before scheduling. It adds 30 minutes and applies to all future exams once granted.
- Rescheduling: allowed up to 24 hours before your appointment, and no more than twice per appointment.
- Cancelling: more than 24 hours ahead gets a refund. Later cancellations or no-shows forfeit the fee.
What Should You Do Before Exam Day?
- Try the AWS Exam Demo on Pearson VUE’s AWS page to learn the interface, including how to flag questions for review.
- Check ID rules for your format. Requirements differ between online and test-center exams, and the name on your ID must match your account.
- For online exams, expect to communicate with a proctor before and during the session.
- Flag and move on. With compensatory scoring, a hard question in one domain can be offset elsewhere, so don’t let one scenario eat your time.

How Is AIB-C01 Different From AIF-C01?
AIF-C01 tests what AI and AWS AI services are. AIB-C01 tests what to do about them as a business leader. If you searched for an AWS Certified AI Practitioner AIF-C01 study guide PDF, note that it covers a different exam with a different goal.
| AIB-C01 (AI Business Strategist) | AIF-C01 (AI Practitioner) | |
|---|---|---|
| Category | Business | Foundational |
| Duration | 130 minutes | 90 minutes |
| Questions | Multiple choice and multiple response | 65 questions |
| Price | 100 USD | 100 USD |
| Languages | 2 | 12 |
| Core skill | Business judgment on AI investments, governance, and adoption | Knowledge of AI, ML, generative AI concepts, and AWS AI services |
AIF-C01 figures from the AWS Certified AI Practitioner certification page.
Holding both is a credible pairing. AWS Certified AI Practitioner study material covers much of AIB-C01 Domain 1, so earning AIF-C01 first can shorten your AIB-C01 prep.
What Are the Most Common AIB-C01 Study Mistakes?
- Studying service configuration. Console steps and API details are out of scope. Every hour spent there is an hour taken from Domain 2.
- Skimming Domain 4 because it “sounds soft.” It holds 19 of the 58 skills and the longest block of official course time.
- Treating responsible AI as a final checkbox. The guide frames it as governance by design, built into planning (Skill 3.1.3). Options that add governance only after launch are usually wrong.
- Choosing the most advanced AI option by default. An agent is not the answer when a fixed rule or a simple RAG assistant meets the need. The exam rewards the simplest option that solves the business problem.
Are You Ready to Book the Exam?
You are ready when you can do all of the following without notes:
- Explain RAG, fine-tuning, AI agents, and rule-based automation to an executive in one sentence each
- Outline a business case with KPIs, a baseline, and an ROI method for an AI initiative
- Assign a use case a risk tier and name the human-oversight safeguard it needs
- Place an organization on an AI maturity model and name its next investment
- Explain why AI programs stall after a successful pilot and name three leadership fixes
- Explain why each wrong option fails on every Official Practice Question Set item
Should You Take the AWS AI Business Strategist Certification?
Take it now if you influence AI decisions (budgets, vendors, roadmaps, client advice) and want proof of strategic AI judgment. It is the only AWS credential built for that role, and the official prep path costs nothing but time.
Take AIF-C01 first if you are new to AI vocabulary. The AWS Certified AI Business Strategist AIB-C01 exam assumes you already know what RAG, agents, and model drift are.
Skip it if your role is hands-on building. An Associate or Professional AI certification will signal your skills better.
Your next step: Take the free Official Practice Question Set today as a diagnostic, then book your exam four weeks out. A fixed date turns this AWS AIB-C01 study guide into a deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a penalty for guessing on AIB-C01?
No. Unanswered questions are scored as incorrect and wrong answers carry no extra penalty, so answer every question.
How long is the AWS AI Business Strategist certification valid?
Three years, the same as other AWS certifications. You recertify by passing the current version of the exam.
When will I get my AIB-C01 results?
Within five business days in your AWS Certification Account, under Exam History. Most AWS exams do not show pass or fail on screen.
