Nutanix Certification Requirements 2026: Can You Skip the NCA?

Nutanix Certification Requirements 2026: Can You Skip the NCA?

Yes, you can skip the NCA. Nutanix certification requirements include no formal prerequisite for the Associate (NCA) or any Professional (NCP) exam, so an experienced admin can book NCP-MCI first. Only two exams require a prior certification: NCM-MCI needs an active NCP or NCM, and the partner-only NCS-Core needs an active NCP-MCI. Every Nutanix certification earned since August 1, 2025 stays valid for three years.

What Are the Nutanix Certification Requirements for Each Exam?

Two kinds of requirements apply. Hard prerequisites block you from booking, while recommended experience only predicts whether you will pass. Fees are in USD per attempt as of October 30, 2026.

Only one exam on the core track requires a prior certification. Experience levels are guidance, not booking rules.

Many guides still quote 6-12 months of experience for the NCA. The current official NCA page lists about 3-6 months and names new IT staff, Tier 1 support and STEM students as typical candidates.

Which Nutanix Exams Have a Hard Prerequisite?

Three exams have an entry condition you must meet before you can sit them:

  1. NCM-MCI: Your NCP or NCM must be unexpired on booking day. Any NCP track qualifies, not only NCP-MCI.
  2. NCS-Core: You need partner or employee status plus an active NCP-MCI.
  3. NCX-MCI: You build and defend your own enterprise solution design, so the real prerequisite is a finished design, not a certificate.

Everything else is open. Nutanix does not ask for proof of experience at booking, so the experience figures above describe a passing candidate, not an entry rule.

The NCP-AI trap: NCP-AI has no certification gate, but its official profile expects Kubernetes knowledge at the level of the CKA exam. A vSphere admin with no Kubernetes background meets the booking rules and still walks in underprepared. A 7.5 version also entered beta on October 26, 2026, so confirm which version is live before you study.

Can You Skip the NCA and Go Straight to NCP-MCI?

Yes, if you already run virtual infrastructure. Skipping the NCA saves its $100 fee and a full study cycle. Match your background to the right starting exam:

VMware admins are a group Nutanix actively courts, and it has offered them a free NCP-MCI pathway (see the free offer timeline below). For the platform differences that trip up vSphere admins, read our Nutanix vs VMware comparison.

What Is the Nutanix Certification Path From NCA to NCX?

The Nutanix certification path has four technical levels. You can enter at either of the first two:

  1. Associate: The Nutanix NCA certification proves you can navigate Prism and handle routine operations.
  2. Professional: NCP-MCI is the core track. Specialty tracks cover Unified Storage (NCP-US), Cloud Native (NCP-CN), Database Automation (NCP-DB), Network & Security (NCP-NS), Business Continuity (NCP-BC), AI (NCP-AI), Multicloud Automation (NCP-MCA), End User Computing (NCP-EUC) and Cloud Integration for AWS or Azure (NCP-CI). Every Nutanix certification professional track is open to book.
  3. Master: NCM-MCI is a live-lab exam that tests optimization and troubleshooting on real clusters.
  4. Expert: NCX-MCI is a design defense for architects. The Nutanix Platform Expert (NPX) sits above it as the top design credential.

What Do You Need on Exam Day, and What Happens If You Fail?

You schedule every technical exam from the My Certifications page in Nutanix University. The official exam blueprint sets these rules:

  • Delivery: Remote proctoring or an in-person session at a select test center.
  • Remote candidates: Register with valid ID, then follow browser-based instructions on exam day.
  • Test center candidates: Bring a government-issued ID and arrive 15 minutes early.
  • Passing score: 3000 on a scaled range of 1000 to 6000.
  • Retakes: After a failed attempt you get two more tries, with a 7-day wait between each. Every attempt is paid.
  • Lockout: After three attempts you must wait 60 days, then email Nutanix to request a reset.
  • Security: Nutanix can refuse certification for copying or sharing exam content, photographing questions, using study materials during the exam or testing under a false identity.

Budget for the ceiling, not the fee. Three NCP attempts cost $600 before the 60-day lockout, and three NCM-MCI attempts cost $900.

How Long Is Nutanix Certification Validity, and How Do You Renew?

Nutanix certification validity is three years for NCA, NCP and NCM certifications earned on or after August 1, 2025. There is no separate renewal fee. You renew by passing, and paying for, a new exam:

  • A new NCP renews all your active NCP and NCA certifications.
  • A new NCM renews all your active NCM, NCP and NCA certifications.
  • A certification must still be active to be renewed. An expired one is not revived.
  • NCX-MCI currently does not expire.

This worked example shows how one well-timed exam keeps everything alive:

DateExam passedWhat stays valid
Sep 2025NCANCA until Sep 2028
Oct 2026NCP-MCINCP-MCI and NCA until Oct 2029
Jun 2029NCM-MCINCM-MCI, NCP-MCI and NCA until Jun 2032
Nov 2029 insteadNCM-MCIOnly NCM-MCI, because NCP-MCI and NCA expired in Oct 2029

The fix is simple: schedule your next exam at least a few months before your oldest active certification expires.

How Much Does It Cost, and Is There a Nutanix Free Certification in 2026?

The core path of NCA, NCP-MCI and NCM-MCI costs $600 in exam fees, or $500 if you skip the NCA. Our Nutanix certification cost breakdown goes deeper on every fee and voucher option.

If you searched for a Nutanix free certification 2026 offer, we found none open on October 30, 2026. Free exams arrive in short windows, usually around new version launches:

Standing Nutanix exam discounts are smaller but always available:

  • 50% off NCA and NCP exams for Nutanix User Group members.
  • Discounted exams for military and veteran communities.
  • An exam voucher included with Exam Prep classes and instructor-led product training.

The pattern is predictable. When a track moves to a new version, watch the Nutanix Education Blog during launch week.

What Does the Nutanix Certification Salary Data Show?

Skillsoft’s IT Skills and Salary survey (May to September 2024) ranked NCP-MCI v6.5 the third highest-paying IT certification in the US at $175,409 USD, against $79,253 in Europe and the Middle East and $56,005 in Asia-Pacific.

Read that figure with care. The typical US holder in that survey was a 41-year-old systems engineer with six certifications, so the number reflects seniority as much as the badge. Our Nutanix certification ROI analysis weighs those exam fees against median pay.

Verdict: Should You Take the NCA First?

  • Book NCP-MCI first if you manage Nutanix or vSphere clusters every week. The NCA adds a fee and a delay without unlocking anything.
  • Take the NCA first if you have under a year of infrastructure work or have never opened Prism. It is the cheapest way to learn the exam format.
  • Book NCM-MCI next if you hold any active NCP. One pass renews every lower certification for three more years.
  • Go NCP-MCI, then NCS-Core if you deliver services for a Nutanix partner.

Before you pay for any attempt, run a timed set of Nutanix practice tests to check that you can finish within the time limit, then book the exam your background points to.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do You Need Nutanix Certification Training Before You Book?

No. Training is recommended, never required. Each exam maps to one official course:

  • NCA: Nutanix Hybrid Cloud Fundamentals (NHCF)
  • NCP-MCI: Enterprise Cloud Administration (ECA)
  • NCP-BC: Business Continuity Administration (NBCA)
  • NCP-NS: Network and Security Administration (NNSA)
  • NCP-AI: Nutanix Enterprise AI Administration (NAIA)
  • NCM-MCI: Advanced Administration and Performance Management (AAPM), which covers about 80% of the exam objectives

Should You Take the 6.10 or 7.5 Version?

Take 7.5 wherever it exists. NCA 7.5 appointments opened on July 28, 2026, and NCP-MCI 7.5 was bookable at launch. Passing either awards the version 7 credential.

Is the Nutanix Certifications Path Different for Partners?

Yes. Partners add the Nutanix Certified Services (NCS) program, which starts with NCS-Core and then offers Professional, Master and Expert badges in four delivery tracks. If you fail the NCS-Core exam twice, the instructor-led class becomes mandatory.

What Is the Nutanix NSS Certification?

The Nutanix NSS certification was the legacy Nutanix Support Specialist (NSS) 5.0 credential. It is no longer in the current catalog. Its closest modern equivalents are the NCA for entry-level support staff and NCP-MCI for Tier 2 engineers.
