CKAD vs CKA in 2027: Which Kubernetes Exam Should You Take?

CKAD vs CKA in 2027: Which Kubernetes Exam Should You Take?

Take the CKAD if you build and ship applications on Kubernetes. Take the CKA if you install, upgrade, secure, or troubleshoot the clusters those applications run on, or if you want the CKS later.

  • Difficulty: The Linux Foundation rates both exams as Intermediate. Our editorial rating: CKA is harder because its scope is wider.
  • Pass rate: Not published by the Linux Foundation for either exam. Any percentage you see online is unverified.
  • Preparation time: No official benchmark exists. Engineers already using kubectl daily usually need weeks; complete beginners need months.

Why Does the CKAD vs CKA Choice Matter More in 2027?

Kubernetes is now the default platform, not a niche skill. The CNCF Annual Cloud Native Survey, published January 20, 2026, reports that 82% of container users run Kubernetes in production.

Four dated facts shape a 2027 decision:

  1. The 12-month window covers 2027. An exam bought in late 2026 can be scheduled through most of 2027, and a pass in 2027 stays valid into 2029.
  2. Kubernetes v1.35 reaches end of life on February 28, 2027, according to the Kubernetes releases page. The CKA currently tests on v1.35, and the FAQ commits to tracking newer minor releases, so expect a version change before or during your 2027 attempt.
  3. The CKA curriculum was updated on February 18, 2025. Per the CKA program change notice, the current list includes the Gateway API, Helm and Kustomize, CRDs, operators, and workload autoscaling. Check that any study material you buy postdates that update.
  4. No 2027 price change has been announced on the official exam pages as of October 15, 2026.

We mapped every competency line on both official exam pages. Neither exam is a subset of the other.

The task style differs too. CKA tasks often start on a node (kubeadm upgrade plan, systemctl restart kubelet). CKAD tasks usually start from a generated manifest (kubectl create deployment web –image=nginx –dry-run=client -o yaml).

Is CKAD Easier Than CKA?

Usually, yes, in scope. Not always on exam day.

Linux depth neededLightHeavy: kubelet, certificates, systemd, etcd

Candidate discussions on community forums such as KodeKloud’s repeat one pattern: CKAD feels easier to study but more rushed, while CKA takes longer to prepare but feels calmer once you know the internals. Treat that as opinion, not data.

Can You Use Documentation in the Exam?

Yes, but the allowed list differs. Per the Linux Foundation resources-allowed page, both exams permit kubernetes.io/docs, the Kubernetes blog and Helm docs. Only the CKA also permits the Gateway API documentation. You may use the docs search box but may not open external search results.

What Does CKAD vs CKA Really Cost Over Four Years?

The ckad vs cka fee is identical at purchase. Bundle options are also identical: $625 with a THRIVE-ONE annual subscription, or $645 with the official course (LFD259 for CKAD, LFS258 for CKA).

The long-term cost is where they split. Under the CARE program, passing or recertifying CKS on or after June 18, 2026 automatically renews your CKA and aligns its expiry date. Passing or recertifying CKAD does not renew CKA.

Credentials kept currentFirst certificationRenewal at year 2Four-year total
CKAD only$445$445$890
CKA only$445$445$890
CKA and CKAD$890$890$1,780
CKA and CKS (CKS page)$890$445$1,335

Our calculation at current list prices, assuming no price change and no discounts. Renewal means passing the exam again before expiry.

The takeaway: once you hold CKA, a second exam in CKS saves $445 per renewal cycle compared with CKAD, because one CKS retake keeps both credentials current.

Does CKA or CKAD Pay More?

No US government source tracks pay by certification. The closest reliable proxy is the occupation each exam maps to, using May 2025 BLS data.

MeasureSoftware developers (CKAD-aligned)Network and computer systems administrators (CKA-aligned)
Median annual wage$135,980$99,130
Projected employment change, 2025 to 2035+10%-4%
Average annual openings106,100 (developers, QA analysts and testers combined)13,400

Sources: BLS software developers, BLS network and computer systems administrators.

Do not read this as “CKAD pays $36,850 more.” BLS notes that DevOps-focused software developers are absorbing some administrator tasks, so many CKA holders in platform and SRE roles are counted as developers. Your job title sets your pay band; the certificate helps you get the title. At $445, either exam costs less than 0.5% of either median wage.

Which Should You Take First, and Can You Do Both?

Your daily workStart withThen
Writing services, Dockerfiles and Helm chartsCKADCKA if you move into platform work
Owning CI/CD that deploys to a managed clusterCKADCKA when you join the cluster on-call
Running clusters, upgrades and incidentsCKACKS
Security or compliance focusCKACKS (requires a passed CKA)
New to KubernetesNeither yetBuild a lab cluster first, then CKAD

Taking both back to back is efficient because of the shared topics above. If you take both, sit the CKA first: its broader scope covers the shared material in more depth, leaving only the CKAD-only column to study.

How Should You Prepare in 2027?

  1. Weight your hours by the official domains. For CKA, give troubleshooting the most time; for CKAD, configuration and security.
  2. Work imperatively. Generate YAML with –dry-run=client -o yaml and edit it. Writing manifests from scratch costs minutes you do not have.
  3. Use simulator session one as a diagnostic. Fix weak domains, then use session two as a dress rehearsal.
  4. Check the exam version the week you book. Practice on that Kubernetes minor release, especially for CKA during the v1.35 end-of-life period.
  5. Keep the retake in reserve. Book early enough in your 12-month window to use the second attempt if needed.

Verdict

  • Choose CKAD if Kubernetes is where your code runs and someone else owns the cluster. It certifies work you already do, at the same price.
  • Choose CKA if you run clusters, carry a pager, or plan a security specialization. It is the only route to CKS, and CKS renewals now keep it current.
  • Choose CKA, then CKS if you want two credentials at the lowest four-year cost.
  • Choose neither yet if you cannot deploy, expose and debug a pod from memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the CKA worth it in 2027?

For infrastructure, platform and SRE roles, yes. It is the only path to CKS, and through CARE it renews whenever you renew CKS.

Does passing CKA mean I can pass CKAD without studying?

No. The CKAD-only column above, including image builds, probes, multi-container patterns and SecurityContexts, still needs dedicated practice.

Which languages are the exams offered in?

English, Simplified Chinese and Japanese. You can switch language during the exam.

What computer setup do I need?

One active monitor (dual monitors are not supported), a webcam, a microphone and the PSI Secure Browser. The Linux Foundation recommends a 15-inch or larger screen at 1080p and advises against locked-down work laptops.

Does every purchase include the simulator?

No. CKA-SINGLE and CKAD-SINGLE registrations do not include simulator access.

My CKA was earned before April 1, 2024. When does it expire?

CKA and CKAD certifications earned before that date are valid for 3 years. Later ones are valid for 2 years.

I passed CKS before June 18, 2026. Will CARE renew my CKA?

No. CARE renewals of CKA are not retroactive and apply only to CKS passes or recertifications on or after June 18, 2026.

Can candidates under 18 take these exams?

Candidates aged 16 to 18 can test if a parent or guardian submits the Parental Release form at least 2 weeks before the exam and gives consent with ID at check-in.
