CAPM Certification Cost 2026-27: Spend $400 or $1,800?

CAPM Certification Cost 2026-27: Spend $400 or $1,800?

The CAPM certification cost is $300 for the exam if you are not a PMI member, or $225 if you are. Add the 23 hours of project management education PMI requires, and most self-funded candidates pay $330 to $700 all-in. Bootcamp routes push the total past $2,000 for the exact same credential.

Quick facts2026-27 answer
Exam fee$225 (PMI member) / $300 (non-member)
Realistic all-in total$330 to $700 (self-paced); $1,299 to $2,099 (bootcamps)
Difficulty (our rating)Moderate, 3 out of 5: broad but mostly knowledge-based, with fewer scenario questions than the PMP
Pass ratePMI does not publish a CAPM pass rate or passing score
Realistic prep time23 required contact hours plus 40 to 80 hours of study
Cheapest legitimate pathFull-time student membership plus a marketplace course on sale, about $287

What Are the Official PMI Fees for the CAPM in 2026-27?

Your CAPM PMI certification cost has three PMI-set parts: the exam, an optional membership, and renewal every three years. Everything else is training you buy from a provider.

PMI feePMI memberNon-member
CAPM exam (first attempt)$225$300
Re-examination (attempts 2 and 3)$150$200
Renewal (every 3 years)$60$150
PMI membership, US (12 months)$164Not applicable
PMI student membership, US$32Not applicable

The CAPM certification cost USA candidates pay is identical in every state. PMI prices by the country on your PMI account, not by where you test.

How Much Does a CAPM Course Cost?

The 23 contact hours are the biggest variable in your budget, ranging from about $30 to $1,799. PMI requires them before the exam, and a free YouTube playlist does not count: you need a course that issues a completion record.

Training optionTypical priceNotes
Marketplace self-paced course (on sale)About $30Enough for a total near $330
PMI’s official on-demand course$350 member / $400 non-memberExactly 23 hours
Live online bootcamp$999 to $1,290Instructor-led, 3 to 4 days
In-person bootcamp$1,799Classroom, 4 days

Keep your completion certificate. PMI can audit your 23 hours, and a course without a dated certificate showing the hours won’t count, however cheap it was.

  • Two lower-cost routes most guides miss:
  • PMI’s own on-demand CAPM Exam Prep Course delivers exactly 23 hours and 23 PDUs, so it also counts toward renewal later if you take it after you are certified.
  • The Google Project Management Certificate costs $49 a month in the US and gives graduates 100+ hours of project management education toward PMI credentials, with access to the CAPM at a discounted price. Most learners finish in three to six months, so expect $147 to $294 in subscription fees.

What Are the CAPM Exam Requirements, and How Do They Drive Cost?

The CAPM exam requirements are short, which is why the CAPM is so cheap to qualify for. According to PMI’s CAPM page, you need:

  1. A secondary degree (high school diploma, GED, or global equivalent)
  2. To be at least 18 years old
  3. 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam

No project experience is required, so you pay for no experience documentation or audit prep. You get up to three attempts within one year of approval.

Is PMI Membership Worth It for the CAPM?

For most candidates, no. Membership costs more than it saves, even if you buy PMI’s own course. The exception is full-time students.

Your situationNon-member totalMember totalMembership verdict
Exam only$300$389 ($164 + $225)Loses $89
Exam + PMI’s official course$700$739 ($164 + $225 + $350)Loses $39
Full-time student, exam only$300$257 ($32 + $225)Saves $43

The student rate is the one consistent win. PMI’s student membership carries the same benefits as a full membership, including member exam pricing, for students enrolled full time in a college or university.

The renewal discount ($90 every three years) doesn’t change the math. You only get it if you are a paying member at renewal time, which means another year of dues.

Membership prices vary by country and change over time, so use the break-even point instead of a fixed number: membership only pays for itself on the CAPM if it costs less than $75, the exam discount. If you also buy PMI’s own course, the threshold rises to $125, because the course adds a $50 member discount.

Join PMI for the CAPM only if you are a full-time student, or member discounts on other PMI purchases in the same 12 months will cover the gap ($89 at the current US price).

What Factors Affect the CAPM Certification Cost?

Training format moves your total the most; membership, retakes and late rescheduling add smaller amounts.

Cost factorPotential cost impactHow to control it
Training format$30 to $1,799 (the largest swing)Self-paced covers the same 23 hours
PMI membership+$89 (most people) or -$43 (students)Use the table above
Failed attempts+$150 to $200 per retake, up to twoBook only after passing timed mocks
Late rescheduling+$70 if you reschedule or cancel within 30 days of your appointmentPick a date more than 30 days out
Account countryIndia pays local INR prices (see below)Register under the country where you live
Funding sourceCan reach $0 out of pocketEmployer or GI Bill (see below)
Renewal$60 to $150 every 3 yearsEarn free PDUs before your cycle ends

Worst case on exam fees alone: a non-member who fails twice pays $700 ($300 + $200 + $200). A member pays $525.

CAPM vs PMP Certification Cost: Why the CAPM Is a PMP Training Voucher

The CAPM costs less than half as much as the PMP to sit. The bigger value, which no top-ranking guide models, is what an active CAPM saves you later.

Renewal15 PDUs + $60 / $150 every 3 years60 PDUs + $60 / $150 every 3 years

PMP fees and course prices from the same PMI store check cited in the fee table above.

PMI’s PMP page confirms an active CAPM fulfills the entire 35-hour PMP training requirement. It also states that from December 1, 2026, live PMP classes count only if delivered by a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an accredited program.

The timing trap almost nobody mentions

  • The PMP needs 3 years of project leadership with a bachelor’s degree.
  • The CAPM runs on a 3-year cycle and needs 15 PDUs (at least 9 in education) to renew.
  • So most CAPM holders become PMP-eligible right as their CAPM expires.
2026-27 camp certification cost by path

Renewing your CAPM before you sit the PMP keeps your total between $1,155 and $1,525. Letting it lapse means buying a 35-hour PMP course, which pushes the total to $1,264 to $4,375. Skipping the CAPM entirely costs $934 to $3,675, but leaves you with no credential until you are PMP-eligible.

Renew the CAPM to keep the waiver. A $150 non-member renewal ($60 for members) replaces a 35-hour course costing $259 to $3,000. That saves $109 at minimum, and up to $2,850 against a bootcamp.

Does Location Change the CAPM Cost?

Not in the US: the exam fee is the same everywhere, and only training prices change by city. India is priced separately in rupees.

What is the CAPM certification cost near Seattle, WA or Washington, DC?

If you searched for CAPM certification cost near Seattle WA or CAPM certification cost near Washington, you can test at any Pearson VUE center or online. The local difference is in training:

  • A Seattle provider lists its 4-day CAPM bootcamp at $999 live online versus $1,799 in person, an $800 difference for the same 23 hours.
  • PMI chapter courses run about $1,090 for chapter members and $1,290 for non-members, with early-bird payment plans.

What is the Certified Associate in Project Management CAPM certification cost in India?

These local rupee prices contradict guides claiming one worldwide USD price.

India feePMI memberNon-member
CAPM exam₹15,247₹20,265
Re-examination₹9,457₹13,510
Renewal₹4,053₹10,133
Membership (12 months)₹10,615Not applicable

The member saving (₹5,018) is less than half the membership price, so the same rule applies: skip membership unless you’re a student. GST may apply at checkout.

Can Someone Else Pay for Your CAPM?

Yes. Employers and the GI Bill can bring your out-of-pocket cost to $0.

Funding routeWhat it coversLimits
Employer educational assistanceExam, course, materialsUp to $5,250 per year tax-free to you under an employer program, per IRS Publication 15-B
GI Bill test reimbursementExam fee, including retakes and failed attemptsUp to $2,000 per test; charges your entitlement, per the VA
GI Bill prep course reimbursementCAPM coursePost-9/11 GI Bill or Chapter 35 only, and only for prep courses tied to an approved test

Before you pay: search the VA’s licensing and certification tool for the CAPM, and ask your employer whether reimbursement requires pre-approval.

Is CAPM Certification Worth It at These Prices?

Yes, if you can’t sit the PMP yet. A $330 to $700 credential is a small bet against a field where the median wage for project management specialists was $102,320 in May 2025, with 7% job growth projected through 2035.

That median reflects experienced professionals, not CAPM holders specifically. The CAPM’s job is to get you into entry roles where you build PMP-qualifying experience.

It is not worth it if you already have 3+ years leading projects. Go straight to the PMP instead.

The Verdict: What Should You Actually Pay?

  • Full-time student: join PMI at the student rate, use a marketplace course on sale, and pay about $287.
  • Career changer paying your own way: stay a non-member, use a self-paced course, and budget under $400.
  • You want PMI’s official course: buy it as a non-member for $700 total; membership would add $39.
  • Employer or GI Bill funding available: get pre-approval first, and your out-of-pocket cost can be $0.
  • PMP is your end goal: take the CAPM now and renew it before it expires, because that $60 to $150 renewal replaces a 35-hour PMP course.
  • Already have 3+ years leading projects: skip the CAPM and put the money toward the PMP.

Spending $1,800 on a bootcamp only makes sense if someone else is paying or you need live instruction to stay accountable. For everyone else, $400 buys the same credential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the CAPM exam cost the same online and at a test center?

PMI lists a single CAPM exam fee and lets you choose a Pearson VUE center or online proctoring after you pay. Confirm the amount at checkout, since your delivery choice affects logistics such as room setup and ID checks.

Do I pay PMI before my application is approved?

No. You submit your application first, and PMI asks for the exam fee only after accepting it. There is no separate application fee.

Does PMI’s free 30-day trial membership get me the $225 exam price?

No. PMI’s membership page shows member pricing on certifications belongs to the paid Professional membership. The trial includes tools like PMI Infinity and webinars, but not exam discounts.

Is a CAPM practice test worth paying for?

Usually. A CAPM practice test costs less than a single $200 non-member retake, and timed mocks show which of the four domains you’re weak in before exam day.

Will PMI raise the CAPM fee in 2026-27 like it did for the PMP?

As of October 2026, the CAPM exam fee remains $225 for members and $300 for non-members while PMP pricing has risen. PMI can change prices at any time, so confirm in your PMI cart before paying.
